"canadian" irony

or as my mother would say

------------

[home]

People just can't seem to get irony right. First there was the Ethan Hawke in "Reality Bites" version, which besides being incorrect should be discounted because he was supposed to be just sitting there in the coffee shop all casual like reading Heidegger's Being and Time. Sure, dude. "Hey there's my Dasein."

Now we have Alanis Morrisette's Isn't it Ironic?. The simple answer to this question is: no. If there are ten thousand spoons and all I need is a knife, that just sucks. It's not ironic. Rain on my wedding day? A free ride when I've already paid? Isn't it shitty is more like it!

This song presents what we (Americans) might call "Canadian Irony," that is, irony that's only approximately 3/4 ironic! The "Canadian" modifier can, of course, be extended to other things besides irony. For example: The New Monkeys (i.e., without Mike Nesmith) = The "Canadian" Monkeys. Super small cropped t-shirts that are in fashion now = "Canadian" t-shirts. Didn't manage to read the whole book? That's no problem. You can still come to the "Canadian" Book Club! Don't feel like revealing your real age? Just share your "Canadian" age: I'm 29 ("Canadian").

a further lesson in irony

Finally, the last word on irony. An example taken from an actual and (unfortunately) active page on the Web.
